Coaching Qualification and Training

Being part of a ringette team is about more than the game — it's about helping kids grow in confidence, teamwork, and spirit. Volunteering is a powerful way to support youth and build community — and it’s incredibly rewarding.

We welcome all kinds of volunteers — from first-time helpers to seasoned coaches — and we’ll support you with everything you need to get started.

Bench staff roles

Choose how you’d like to get involved:

  • Head or assistant coach
  • Trainer
  • On-ice assistant
  • Junior coach
  • Manager

Each option below will take you to a page showing the required certifications, training timelines, and how to get started.

Head or Assistant Coach

All teams (except those in the Open division) must have a fully qualified female coach on the bench. The CRA recommends more than one female coach in case of absence.

Each season, individuals interested in serving as a Head Coach must submit an application to the CRA. An interview is required for all first-time applicants and for any contested positions (i.e., more than one applicant for the same role). Following interviews (if applicable), the CRA Board will vote to select the Head Coach for each team. All applicants will be notified of the outcome. Once selected, the Head Coach will propose their desired bench staff (e.g., assistant coaches, trainers). These selections are subject to review, and final approval rests with the CRA Board. Please note: Applying for a position does not guarantee selection. All roles must be approved each season.

Trainer

Only 1 trainer is permitted on the bench during a game at a time. The trainer is not permitted to help on the ice at practice unless Coach Initiation in Sport, MED, and Keeping Girls in Sport module (U12+) are completed

On-Ice Assistant

On-ice assistants are not added to the TRF and cannot be on the bench for a game.

Junior Coach

14-17-year-olds; must be older than the division in which they are coaching; only 2 junior coaches on the bench at a time (no limit on-ice).

Manager

Only certified coaches and trainers are permitted on the bench during games. Team Managers do not have bench access but have access to areas like the change rooms as part of the team staff.
